Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders can be characterized by extreme worry and fear. The disorder can interfere with someone’s ability to carry out daily activities. Genetics, brain chemistry, personality and life events all may contribute to one’s development of an anxiety disorder.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Those dealing with an anxiety disorder may experience symptoms and show signs on a daily basis for at least six months. Signs can include:
  • Trouble managing feelings of worry
  • Trouble sleeping and concentrating
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Irrational fear of a place or object
  • Randomly occurring panic attacks
What to do when a loved one is experiencing anxiety or panic?
  • Reassure that everything is going to be okay
  • Say you are there and available for support
  • Do not lecture or talk down
  • Take action and seek professional help if condition worsens
  • Breathing exercises

TREATMENT

Successful treatment for anxiety disorders varies from person to person and can include different combinations of treatments. It is important to consult with a doctor about treatment and if symptoms worsen.

Psychotherapy

Such as Cognitive-behavioral therapy and Interpersonal therapy are intended to manage anxious behaviors through personal counseling. Can be tailored for specific anxieties.

Medication

Intended to help with symptoms associated with disorder Examples:
  • Anti-anxiety medication (Benzodiazepines)
  • Antidepressants
  • Beta-blockers
